About Kitano-temmangū Shrine
This shrine is the head shrine of around 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan that worship Sugawara no Michizane, who is known as the god of learning and performing arts, as their deity.
It is commonly visited as a shrine to pray for exam success/academic success, excellence in culture and the arts, as well as protection from disasters and misfortunes.
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was founded over 1000 years ago, in 947 under Emperor Murakami and is the birthplace of the Tenjin faith.
The current main hall of the shrine, which is a national treasure, was built by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1607.
